Hurricane
Irma is a category 5 hurricane that is barreling towards Puerto Rico, with wind
gusts of 215 miles per hour (mph), and surface winds of about 180 mph. That’s
about the winds of an Ef4 tornado! It is expected to make landfall in Puerto
Rico and Dominican Republic on Thursday, September 7. It might hit Florida on
Saturday, September 9. Expected damage
could be: major floods, multiple tornadoes, and deaths of many people if they
don’t evacuate. States of emergency have been issued in Florida. If any West students have family or friends there,
they should let them know they might need to evacuate.
